the adventure project was started by two ladies who met while traveling in liberia becky straw and jody landers
their current project is working with small farmers in sub-sahara africa to increase the productivity of their farms using an innovative pump and irrigation system
that allows them to sell extra food at the market and create income which can then be used to send their kids to school or get medical care or raise their standard of living

'one laptop

per child' update

brazil/argentina/uruguay/nigeria/lybia/pakistan/thailand/the palestinian territories
quite an alliance
several central american countries and three more african countries may join soon

what are they joining ??
nicholas negroponte's one laptop per child  project

soon students in these countries will be recieving their very own lime green laptop computer
complete with the XO operating system
and a specially designed interface
that replaces the desktop with 'the neighborhood'

when they turn on their computer the opening screen displays a stick figure icon surrounded by a white ring
the ring contains all the current activities which are then activated by clicking the icon

the computer has no hard drive but it does contain a built-in wireless network  which finds classmates who are nearby and displays them as different colored stick figures

by moving the cursor over the icons
their classmates' names or photos appear by clicking again the students can chat
with each other or collaborate on projects

the computer also has built-in speakers and a camera
512 megabytes of flash memory and a usb port
where more storage can be attached

this is a powerful story
it's gonna pop up again when brazil and thailand and south africa and egypt and china start handing them
out by the millions to their kids and when they start writing programs and communicating on their own side crank laptop

i remember my first pencil in 1954 and

i really do can't imagine what

i love the way computing still holds forth the same spiritual
mystery the same glimmering quest the same
smoky mirrors of the old medieval days
it certainly has the deep forests the wolves lying
wait and the holy mounds on the hill

i'm learning now how to navigate my new ibook oh joy
i'm an apple boy i have put away my pc and journeyed
forth to discover the new land where it is summer always but
wait - here is the same injustice the
same cultish mystery -- mist story -- i get it
the same cyber geeks who wrote this book were wizards then

lie in my hand and i will hold the power then to open

for our ancestors life meant farming
the land with your family or clan as the organizing
unit agonizing as the industrial era shredded the fabric
of our connections and now in the communications age strangely
re-woven again

this computer
basic tool of our sacred technology is fairly
innocuous useless unless it's connected to other computers
- see where i'm going here - we're all connected
even more than we were before the internet age
ushered in (arguably) by the emergence of netscape the first browser
to really turn people on to the internet

that's the premise - well - i took it out for a spin
of kevin kelly in the august issue of wired we are the web article
see if i can sell some magazines here
and the premise that we have no idea where the internet is going
based on the premise that we missed so badly on where we thought it would be right now
is plausible to me
and i'd like to offer my own annotations
in addition to kevin's annotations on the subject because
well because this is my blog

in tran thailand sitting by the kitchen window by the garden and the big bannana tree looking
in with big green ears hangin down and they'll check it out whatever
they wanna checkitout play some rap music on their itunes whatever
email sital in chicago whatever put up a blog invite tourists to their guesthouse bungalow by the
canal in tran where you catch the ferry to the monkee island beaches with more bungalows
little ones on stilts sitting on the beach with windows on all four sides looking out at the shoreline and beyond elephant island sitting broad shouldered off shore out there somewhere whatever
